Basic setting for wordpress before doing any post

Here i am going to show you how to do basic setting of your wordpress blog like creating category , pages ,menus and sidebars.

Categories – It is used to sort and group content into different sections. A website publishing content on a variety of topics can divide their website into sections using categories.

Or in simple terms you can say that category is used to distribute your blog topic in several sub topics.

  1. Creating or adding categories to your blogGo to your dashboard and select categories from post menu.

    Dashboard -> Post->Categories

    Now you will get category addition form here only Category name is required and if you leave blank in slug text box it will create it. It is for only for programming purpose so you need not to worry about this.

    Use this for for adding category to your blog

    If you want to create any category under main category then you need to select main category while creating sub category.

    In the above pic you are seeing the recently created category and last column (Count) shows the posts under this category.

    2) Creating Page in wordpress

    For creating page in wordpress go to Pages -> Add New  in dashboard

    Go to dashboard -> Pages -> Add New

    after that you will find a form as given below image

    In this form you will found two text fields one for page heading and other for page content you can add images or videos to this page using Add Media button.

    You can also see the permalink of your page inside red box is actually web address of your page and if you want to change url of your page you can change from here.

    You can do four actions on your page .

    a) Save Draft – Page is not completed but you want to close your work and want to work on that page later.
    b) Preview – When you want to see preview of your page before saving it.
    c) Move to Trash – Move your page to Trash ( Recycle bin ) or temporary delete your page.
    d) Publish – You work is completed and you want to publish that page on web.

    3) Creating Menu for your blogs

    Menu is basically navigation bar for your website and normally it created using pages and pages caption appears in menu. But in wordpress you can add your categories, pages, post or even external link in your menus. For adding menu you don’t need to learn any coding just follow few steps and create menu for your wordpress site.

    When you click Appearance -> Menu in dashboard you find page as above image Where Menu name is Menu 1.  Now Click on Categories link on left side.

    and click on view all to show all categories and select checkbox of required categories and click on Add to Menu Button After that you will see all selected category under Menu Structure heading. Here you can rearrange them using just drag n drop. Now click on Create Menu button to create Menu. You can also change menu name here.

    Now last step click on Manage Locations to fix your menu at primary menu location. Select your menu from drop drown box and click on Save Changes button. You have created menu for your site successfully.

    4) Creating sidebars – It depends how many sidebars supported by your theme. So the sidebar page me be different for your theme. For adding sidebar you have to go Appearance ->Widgets.  Here you can see available widgets on left side and Right sidebar on Right side you can select desired feature in right sidebar by just drag n drop.

    Here i am adding widgets ( Custom Menu )  in Right Sidebar.

    You can also do some changes to your widgets like captions etc. Here i am changing caption My Menu of custom menu  and select your menu from dropdown box Click save to save your work.

    Now all done see the the result of your hard work.

    This is final output your menu is fixed and sidebar fixed. Now you can start your wordpress site or blog.

How to install wordpress in just 10 min

There are two methods to install wordpress in your domain

  • Install wordpress using softaculous app
  • Install wordpress manually

First method is of course very simple but it depends on that if your hosting provider provides softaculous app in your cpanel or not.

Here I am assuming that  your hosting provider provides softaculous wordpress app for easy installation.
Step 1 : – Click on wordpress Icon .

Step 2 : Now Click Install Now Button to open setting page.

Step 3 : – Here is most common setting for your setting page.

Software setup

Choose Protocol http://
Choose domain Type your domain name here
In directory Type your director name where you want to install wordpress and leave empty if you want to install in your domain

Select Theme

Select any theme from available themes  Don’t worry you can change theme later also.
Email installation detail Type your email to get all installation detail.

Click on Install button.

Now install wordpress manually in your domain.

Step 1 :- Download latest wordpress.zip from wordpress.org

Step 2 :- Open your domain’s cpanel or admin panel

Step 3 :- Click on  File Manager Icon

Step 4 :-  Now click on Upload to Upload your wordpress.zip file in public_html or www folder.

Step 5 :- For unzipping your wordpress.zip file just right click on wordpress.zip and select option Extract from menu.

Step 6 :- Open your unzipped wordpress folder and select all file and then click Move to move all file to desired folder.

Step 7 :- Go to then cpanel main page and click on Mysql Database Wizard to create database for wordpress.

Step 8 :- In create database page type desired database name in textbox. And click next step button.

Step 9 :- In create user for database page type desired user name and password in text fields and press next step button to create database.

One thing i want to mention here that please copy the password in safe place for later use.

Step 10 :- In add user to database page you are adding user ( created in step 9 ) to the database ( created in Step 8) and click on ALL PRIVILEGES checkbox and press next button.

Step 11 :- Copy the database  detail in separate file for later use. like

Database Name —–

Database password —-

Host name —— localhost ( default in 90% cases )

Step 12 :- Now open your domain with folder where your moved your wordpress file like http://www.my_domain_name.com/folder_name

In my case I am installing wordpress in blog folder

So in my case url will be or http://www.my_domain_name/blog

Step 13 :- Select language for your installation.

Step 14 :- Just information page click on Let’s Go button.

180Step 15 :- Database information page now type database information that you have copied in Step 8 , Step 9 and Step 10 and click on submit button.

Step 16 :- Click on Run the install button.

Step 17 :-Provide the information of your site like Site Title, Admin user name , password , and email please type information carefully and choose tough password for your admin account and do not use admin or super admin as user name here because it is very easy for hackers.

Step 18 :- Leave checkbox named Discourage search engines from indexing this site uncheck and press button Install wordpress.
